Early Life
Cheri Adams grew up in Johnston, Rhode Island, the eldest daughter of a close Italian family. Life in Rhode Island was quiet and simple for the Adams’ when music came into Cheri’s world through her love of God. Cheri tells the story that while visiting her relatives in Georgia, her cousin asked her to sing for the congregation at church, and Cheri, despite never rehearsing anything before in her life, didn’t hesitate to sing for God.
It was in this moment that she realised the true power that Christian music can have on an individual. No longer did Cheri want to be teacher or a nurse practitioner, all Cheri wanted to be from that point on was a Christian musician. The trip had changed her life forever as it revealed to Cheri just how meaningful Christian music was to her.
When she returned home, Cheri pursued her dreams in music, putting aside the route of medical school and family medicine her parents had envisioned, and instead threw herself feet first into music. It wasn’t long after that Cheri Adams left her home of Rhode Island and travelled. First to Africa on a missionary trip and then to Nashville, the home of Christian music in the United States, where she would end up moving to for an extended period.
Joining Avalon
In 1998, Cheri was invited to be one of the singers in the contemporary Christian music quartet, ‘Avalon’. She hadn’t sent them a demo tape because she didn’t have one. Cheri hadn’t even considered pursuing a record deal with a label! However, after receiving several calls about the position in the group, Cheri decided it must be a sign from God and decided to give it a shot. The manager of the group listened to a couple of seconds of Cheri’s voice over a cup of coffee and immediately invited her to join the group.
Avalon provided Cheri with the opportunity to perform with several artists, both in the secular and Christian music industries. She felt very excited to be able to make music with many talented musicians; however, found the most pride in seeing how people were touched by the lyrics and songs she performed.
During her time in the group, Cheri recorded four albums: ‘In a Different Light’ (1999), ‘Joy: A Christmas Collection’ (2000), ‘Oxygen’ (2001), and ‘O2: Avalon Remixed’ (2002). At the end of 2002, Cheri decided to part ways with the group and moved on to the next part of her musical journey, along with expanding upon her ministry.
"I want people who do not know the Lord to come to know Him in a tangible way. He is faithful to reveal Himself to those who really seek Him."
Solo Career
A couple of months after leaving Avalon, Cheri signed to a record label and began making her own music. Unfortunately, the label took over a year before they began in the studio and went bankrupt after only recording three songs of her album. However, Cheri’s husband Kevin, whom she married in 2001, stepped in when Cheri started questioning her faith due to this early setback. He suggested that they start their own record label, as it was a difficult time in the music industry, with a lot of labels cutting staff and struggling to compete with digital downloading.
In 2005, Cheri released her first solo album, ‘The Sweet Life‘, after completing it with her husband. The pair produced the album themselves, and it was a huge leap of faith for both of them. While making the album, they were able to recruit the help of Tony Morra to refine the textures of the album, and they hired a couple of the best session players in Nashville on their limited budget. Each song on the album contained a story and was organically created.
Relationship with God
Cheri has an incredibly strong relationship with God. Although there have been moments in her life when she questioned her faith and, at times, questioned why God was sending her down a path that seemingly wouldn’t work out, things always seemed to fall into place. Her incredible love of God also plays a large role in why she loves music. She feels like she is able to share the love, hope, and encouragement He provides her to others.
