Maverick City Music was launched in 2018, after Tony Brown and Jonathan Jay decided to create space for diversity by including creatives who are often marginalized such as black people and women who are contemporary Christian singers and songwriters.
They accomplished this by and bringing attention to their voices and ability hosting seventeen songwriting camps which brought together over one hundred Christian artists and songwriters, who together created over a hundred songs. Impressed by the level of talent which the camp was fostering, Brown and Jay decided to start their very own label, Maverick City.
Maverick City Music, the collective of artists signed by the label Maverick City, released their first extended play, Maverick City, Vol. 1, on July 29, 2019. The EP debuted on Billboard‘s Top Gospel Albums Chart at number ten, an incredible feat for a debut, especially considering the rarely seen collaborative album structure which it featured.
On November 12, 2019, Maverick City Music released their follow-up EP, Maverick City, Vol. 2. The release debuted at number thirty-five on Billboard’s Top Christian Albums Chart and was followed by Maverick City Vol. 3 Part 1, in 2020 independently, again released independently through Maverick City.
In the United States the album debuted at number six on Top Christian Albums and number two on Top Gospel Albums chart. Maverick City, Vol. 3 Part 1 also debuted at No. 15 on the Official Christian and Gospel Albums Chart in the United Kingdom.
With such a positive feedback from this success Maverick City Music announced that the song “Man of Your Word” which features Chandler Moore and KJ Scriven, would find its way onto Christian radio stations on August 21, 2020, making it their debut radio single.
“Man of Your Word” peaked at number 18 on the Hot Christian Songs ranking, and spent a total of twenty-six non-consecutive weeks on the chart, another exceptional achievement for magic city.
However, this was only the first taste of success for Maverick City Music as they garnered two nominations for the 2020 GMA Dove Awards, with “Promises” being nominated in the Gospel Worship Recorded Song of the Year award and Maverick City Vol. 3 Part 1 being nominated in the Gospel Worship Album of the Year award and reaching the top on the Billboard Top Gospel Album.
Fostering a collaboration borne a few years earlier through mutual respect, Maverick City Music and Upperroom released their first collaborative extended play titled You Hold It All Together, on November 20, 2020. You Hold It All Together debuted at number twenty on Top Christian Albums and number two on Top Gospel Albums charts in the United States, again a very impressive achievement for a new collaboration.
On January 29, 2021, Maverick City Music and Upperroom released their second collaborative extended play titled Move Your Heart. Move Your Heart debuted at number fifteen on Top Christian Album and number one on Top Gospel Albums charts in the United States.
Another collaboration with Elevation Worship allowed Maverick City Music to release Old Church Basement on April 30, 2021. The album debuted at No. 30 the mainstream Billboard 200 chart, while also charting at No. 1 on the Top Christian Album Chart and the Top Gospel Albums Chart in the United States, with nine tracks from the album also charting in the top ten sector of the Hot Gospel Songs chart. Old Church Basement also debuted at No. 2 on the Official Christian and Gospel Albums Chart in the United Kingdom. The album achieved mainstream chart placements in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Switzerland.
Maverick City Music received three nominations for the 2021 GMA Dove Awards: New Artist of the Year; Worship Recorded Song of the Year for “Jireh” alongside Elevation Worship, Chandler Moore and Naomi Raine; and Worship Album of the Year for Old Church Basement alongside Elevation Worship; the collective won the Dove Award for New Artist of the Year and Worship Album of the Year for Old Church Basement
Maverick City Music has two facets that will significantly influence their career going forward. The first of which is their current level of success, having done things that very few Christian collective bands have ever achieved, something which makes them stand tall in the crowd.
However, what Maverick City Music really has going for it, isn’t just its success, it is its very nature. Maybe now more than ever the world needs a plurality of strong diverse voices carrying messages that can help reshape the world. Maverick City Music is this diverse voice, and their ability to create space for such a voice is what makes them a force to be reckoned with in the Christian music world.
