Laura Story - Worship Leader

Laura Story is a Grammy Award–winning musician and worship leader at Perimeter Church in Atlanta. Having a single that climbed to number 1 on the Billboard Christian Songs chart which then went on to win the 2012 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Song, Laura holds a significant place in the annuls of contemporary Christian music.

Laura began her contemporary Christian music career in 1996 when she met Shane Williams, from the band Silers Bald, at Columbia International University. Williams asked Story to join the band as their bass player, an offer she happily accepted. They were a hard working band, and during her time with them they released four independent albums.

With the band on the cusp of signing a deal with Essential Records, Laura Story’s manager suggested she record a solo album. So it was in 2002, Laura left Silers Bald and began working on her first album, Indescribable, which was released independently that same year. In 2004, the title track of her album was recorded by Chris Tomlin for his album, Arriving. Tomlin’s version peaked at No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs and was included in the compilation album, Passion: How Great Is Our God.

Following the reasonable success of her debut solo album, Laura Story released her second independent album in 2005, titled There Is Nothing. During that year, she also married Martin Elvington, and moved to Atlanta, Georgia, to become an associate worship leader at Perimeter Church, making it a year full of life changes that ushered in a new chapter for Laura Story.

This album led to Laura capturing the attention of several record companies and, in 2006, Story signed a record contract with INO Records. Two years later, she released her third album, Great God Who Saves produced by Ed Cash under the INO banner. The album was received positively both critically and commercial, which was significant as it signalled a new level of success for Laura.

This success was recognised in 2010, when Laura Story was nominated for a Dove Award for Female Vocalist of the Year at the 41st GMA Dove Awards. This recognition was a huge boost to Laura’s confidence, and in May 2011, she released her fourth album, Blessings.

Laura Story - Contemporary Christian Music Song Winner

To date, Laura Story’s fourth album, Blessings, has become her biggest commercial success having debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Christian Albums chart, giving Story her highest placement ever on the album chart. In June 2011, the title track Blessings, reached No. 1 on the Billboard Christian Songs chart, making it Story’s first number one hit.

In an interview not long after, Story explained “Blessings is just a bunch of songs about worshiping when life is hard”. After her husband Martin Elvington was diagnosed with a brain tumour, she felt helplessness and asked “Why didn’t you just fix it, God? You’re all powerful and all loving… just fix it.” Later, after mentioning her desire to return to a normal life, her sister said “You know, I think the detour is actually the road.” She realized that “Spending time with [husband] Martin obviously makes me happy, but it makes me a better person. That’s the blessing of it.”

What's Next For Laura Story?

After the success of Story’s Grammy-winning song, Blessings, Laura went on to release a fifth studio album titled God of Every Story, on September 30, 2013. However after this release, her music career seemed to stagnate. Not one to give up, Laura Story shifted her focus and instead of releasing more music she released a 30-day devotional book entitled What If Your Blessings Come Through Raindrops?

Each chapter contains thoughts, prayers and quotes along with a journaling page for the reader to recall blessings they have seen in their own lives. Whether Laura Story rekindles her musical career or continues to dive into the literary world remains to be seen. But no matter what path she decides upon, Laura Story and her work will still act as a celebration of God’s faithfulness and a representation of God blessings and God’s love for all who listen and read her work.
