Life Before Fame
Kari Jobe was born and raised in Texas along with her younger siblings, Kristen and Caleb. She first started singing when she was three and decided to never stop. Kari’s father worked as a pastor at their family’s church and at the age of five, she became a Christian herself after learning more about God. Living a life with God and placing her love and trust in Him seemed to just click for Kari, and at 13 she even began leading worship.
Eventually, Kari went on to get a degree in psychology and pastoral studies at Oral Roberts University, Christ for the Nations Institute and Dallas Baptist University. After graduating, Kari was given the opportunity to become an associate worship pastor at Gateway Church. She was able to travel to several different countries to lead worship and go on mission trips.
Kari Jobe 's Christian Music Career
Kari Jobe first entered the Christian music scene during her time at Christ for the Nations Institute after her performance of “Revelation Song.” Kari released three albums independently including a compilation album called ‘Kari Jobe,’ a live concert album called ‘Throneroom Worship: Live Acoustic Worship,’ and ‘Bethlehem’ which was a Christmas album. She also featured on a couple of Gateway Worship’s albums before signing with Integrity Music in 2009. With the label, Kari released her self-titled debut studio album that year in both English and Spanish.
The Spanish album was called ‘Le Canto’ and featured the Spanish versions of her songs. ‘Le Canto’ went on to win a Dove Award in the Spanish Album of the Year category. Kari signed to EMI CMG Sparrow Records in 2011 and has since continued to steadily release new music, go on tour and collaborate with other Christian musicians and music groups such as Gateway Worship.
In 2012, Kari released her second album, ‘Where I Find You’ and its Spanish version ‘Donde Te Encuentro.’ Both albums charted incredibly well and Kari was even awarded her first Grammy for ‘Where I Find You’ as the Best Contemporary Christian Album in 2012.
In 2013, Kari competed on the second season of ‘The American Bible Challenge‘ with Scottish Christian singer, Sheila Walsh, and author Lisa Harper as her teammates in an attempt to raise money for the A21 Campaign, which aims to abolish slavery and human trafficking. In 2014, Kari released a live worship album called ‘Majestic.’ Then, in 2017, Kari released her fourth studio album called ‘The Garden’ which also charted extremely well, even peaking at first on the UK’s Top Christian Albums chart.
Everything in our world seems to be shifting, but God has not and will never change.
Family and God
Kari Jobe explains that she has an incredible connection with her family and God. He has been a key part of her life, and Kari is able to see His presence in every situation. In 2014, Kari married Cody Carnes after meeting him while playing in Gateway Worship.
The happy couple has 2 sons called Canyon and Kingston. Kari has found herself in times of great distress and trial; however, these moments have only served to strengthen her relationship with God. One such time was when she was going out for a walk with her children near a lake and one of them fell in.
Kari immediately jumped and managed to save her child; however, the moment was incredibly distressing for her. Despite this, Kari didn’t fear that God had done this to hurt her. Instead, she felt as though she had been set free from the fear and torment she had surrounding her children and other aspects of her life. Another impactful experience in Kari’s life was also the reason why she wrote her Dove Award-winning song “The Garden.”
She wrote the song as a prayer for her sister, who gave birth to a child that was already with God in heaven. Kari had also been pregnant at the time and her family felt incredibly lost. However, Kari realised that although it was tragic, it also served as a reminder from God that He was in control and hadn’t forgotten them. For Kari, God was able to transform this difficult time into something beautiful.
The Latest from Kari Jobe
Kari Jobe’s latest album is her 2020 live album titled ‘The Blessing.’ She recorded the album live at her current church, The Belonging Co. without an audience due to the pandemic. In the album, she puts a lot of focus on the love of God. As she was making it, she didn’t realise the situation that it would be released in but listened to God’s guidance to share messages of overcoming fear and learning to trust and place hope in Jesus.
Prior to the album’s release, Kari worked on a song of the same name with her husband and songwriter, Cody Carnes, as well as Steven Furtick and Chris Brown from Elevation Worship. The song was released just a week before the world was overcome by the pandemic. It charted incredibly well, as the song’s message resonated perfectly with the many people that were facing a new form of hardship and those who felt lost in the difficult times.
