Gospel musicians can traces their origins back to the 17th century. Gospel songs are usually vocal-centric with Christian lyrics but can also include other instruments such as piano, guitar and drums.

The genre overall is very aesthetic and is often played for general entertainment, ceremonies or other religious purposes. Christian gospel music can be heard at church services and on Christian radio stations. Christian gospel music creates feelings of positivity and joy in the listener because of its spiritual lyrics and soulful melodies.

The word ‘gospel’ actually means ‘good news’, which ties into what gospel music is. Gospel music started in African American communities as a way to express their faith through song.

There are four main styles of gospel music: traditional, contemporary, quartet, and praise and worship. 

Christian Gospel musicians generally blur the lines between these styles, creating sub-genres that have unique sounds of their own. 

Traditional gospel music is more suited for choirs, whereas contemporary gospel music is more suited for individual Christian gospel musicians. Gospel music sung in a quartet style is where a small group of, usually, male artists sing together in harmony.

 Praise and worship gospel is a mix of both traditional and contemporary gospel music, where a praise leader guides a small choir in a call and response scenario. 

When you think of praise and worship gospel, you may think of the movie, The Sister Act, in which the music loosely follows this style.

Other subgenres within Christian gospel music include: 

Southern gospel music, which originates from South-eastern parts of the United States;

  • traditional black gospel music, which was music that arose in America due to African American influence;
  • and urban contemporary gospel music, which is the modern evolution of traditional black gospel.

Each subgenre focuses on the beliefs of Christian gospel musicians and the community from which the music came, as well as their views on Christian life.

There are many incredible artists who make Christian music in the gospel genre.

Some of the most popular Christian gospel musicians currently include Hillsong Worship, Bethel Music, Kanye West, the Sunday Service Choir, Tori Kelly and Kirk Franklin. Some of the main reasons for the popularity of these artists is the vulnerability and honesty behind their music. 

This is further established by the way gospel music has reached into many different genres of music.

Amazing Grace is a song that means a lot of things to a lot of people. It speaks about how through God’s grace we can be forgiven and loved again.

The song is timeless and has been performed by many famous musicians and bands such as Elvis Presley, Celine Dion and Destiny’s Child. ‘Amazing Grace’ has been used in movies, plays, as the theme song of civil rights marches, funerals and was even quoted in a speech given by former U.S. President Barack Obama.

Christian gospel music is as soulful as it is inherently Christian. People find who listen to gospel music feel soothed by the melodies and uplifted by the spiritual lyrics. Gospel music also shares inspirational messages with its listeners and can help enrich a person’s faith by helping connect people with each other and with God. It also helps guide people to fully embrace His messages of love.  

 Gospel music is said to bring light to a person clouded by negativity and darkness, no matter their faith, as it combats a person’s feelings of aloneness. Christian gospel songs can provide people with strength during difficult times as they are reminded that we are never truly alone in life because God will always be there for us.
