Early Days of Chris Tomlin

From a young age, Chris was encouraged to pursue music. His father gifted him his first guitar and so Chris followed along with Willie Nelson records in order to learn how to play. At 14, Chris wrote his first song and a few years later, started to lead worship at his local youth group.

After graduating high school, Chris had plans to pursue a career in medicine and had enrolled in Texas A&M University. During his time at university, he became quite active in ‘Breakaway,’ his campus’ Christian group. Eventually, he became the worship leader there. In 1994, Chris graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and continued to involve himself as a worship leader in several Christian camps throughout Texas. Chris continued to participate at Breakaway, and he eventually met Louie Giglio, with whom he would eventually partner to found Passion Conferences in 1997.

Life as a Musician

Chris Tomlin released his independent debut album in 1995, titled ‘Inside Your Love.’ In 1998 he released his second album ‘Authentic’ with Sparrow Records but was not signed to them.

In 2000 Chris decided to sign onto sixstepsrecords, which was a newly founded subsidiary of Passion Conferences. There, he released ‘The Noise We Make’ in 2001

Chris Tomlin has been on tour with many of his fellow contemporary Christian artists, including MercyMe, Steven Curtis Chapman, Delirious?, and Michael W. Smith. He has also headlined at several of his own tours. Chris has participated in a variety of other conferences and festivals such as the SoCal Harvest in Anaheim, Hillsong’s 2007 conference, and the annual Salt Festival in Grand Saline, Texas.

Good Deeds

Chris Tomlin has contributed to a number of charities throughout his life. He is a member of CompassionArt, which is a charity where several songwriters came together and released an album in 2008. Any profits the album generates are to be used to provide aid to people in poverty around the world.

Chris is also a member on the board of directors at CURE International, which he joined in 2014. CURE International is a non-profit organisation that is focused on providing medical assistance to children from developing countries.

In 2019 Chris and his wife, Lauren, also started their own non-profit organisation called Angel Armies, which works to bring ministries and people together in an effort to solve issues that vulnerable youth in the United States are currently having to deal with.

Relationship with God

Chris Tomlin is very dedicated to sharing his love of God with others and living a life that worships Him. He wants other people to be encouraged, uplifted, and refreshed by the hope and love that God can bring to their lives, as He has for Chris. And he sincerely believes that although he (and many other people) may not have his life completely together all the time, God is able to hold him together. That is why Chris does his best to write songs that other people can sing easily, so they too can worship and show their love of God through music.

In an interview, Chris explained that he finds the process of writing music to be quite difficult for him, which is why he enjoys collaborating with other artists, as he has someone else to bounce ideas off of. However, Chris said that when he does find inspiration to write music, he most often finds it in scripture. He explained it as reading through a piece of scripture and having a particular line or paragraph stand out to him, which sparks a whole song.

Recently Released by Chris Tomlin

Chris Tomlin’s most recent album is his 2020 release of ‘Chris Tomlin & Friends.’ The album brought together several of Chris’ artist friends and merged several genres of music together. Chris explained that many of the artists he worked with on the album, he had actually met by chance and felt as though God was really setting up this album to be made. The collaborations felt incredibly easy for Chris, despite the music not being like anything he had done before.

The album featured appearances by Thomas Rhett, Lady A, Needtobreathe, Florida Georgia Line, We the Kingdom, Bear Rinehart, Brett Young, Russell Dickerson, Chris Lane, Cassadee Pope, RaeLynn, and Blessing Offor. It debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Christian Albums chart and was nominated for a GMA Dove Award in 2021.
